大学英语作文范文(精选42篇)

Today when I was relatively free,I mucked around some of my previous classmates’ zones . I surprisingly found that after more than one year’s college life, they are becoming more and more mature, both physically and spiritually . I got that they all lead a meaningful and fruitful life in their school, though study burden is just like a ghost always haunting them . but in my viewpoint,I think pressure is essential and crucial to most of us,unless you have a strong control of yourself and can study without others’ mention . under a given pressure,we will be enforced to do what is indeed good for us but enjoys little popularity among us .

So fairly often when we look back to the past,we may feel guilty at wasting so much time, but simultaneously it will make us rejoice that we have been obliged to do those which turn out to be good for us . so to a large extent, what you loathe may probably do enormous good to you . on the other hand, even though the thing you are compelled to do does no good to you at all,it is also beneficial for you to accept the reality, because many a time in our life,we have no right to choose but to be chosen . life may not always go our way, which indicates if we cannot do following our original wish,we have to face the music and accomplish well what we ought to or have to do . it is also a kind of capability to do well what we disrelish, which implies we have been mature and seen the essence of life through .

In the past, when I was doing something compulsory but useless,I would always nag at it all the time till I finally got away from it . but now,I will show another story . I will also try my best to fulfil my task, and go all out to develop what I am inclined to within all the controllable factors . I hold that since you have started, why not give it as well as yourself a perfect ending?no matter it is favorable or not, fulfilling a task successfully and excellently can show and cultivate your practical ability . hence I deeply believe only by doing so can we achieve the utmost benefit within extremely limited resources.

the following aspects could best illustrate the advantages of internet. netsurfers (网上冲浪者) in different countries can share interesting knowledge and the latest information. besides, internet has provided a major opportunity to buy and sell merchandise (商品). what is more, people may get medical help or even vote on internet. its advantages seem countless.

behind all this glowing talk, however, are some problems. internet makes people passive by stopping them making their own entertainment. so much so that when there is a breakdown or jam, people may find that world wide web turns into world wide wait. what is worse, some children have access to the scenes of violence and se. apart from these, it can be affected by viruses(病毒).

we should handle its problems, meanwhile we should eploit its potential as well. with proper management of internet people ought to eperience more fruits of the information revolution. all the wisdom of the ages, all the information that has enlightened mankind for centuries, should be available to us with the healthy development of internet.

The first time in life? Then grasp your chance with your perfect performance on the dating night, by learning the following principle in heart.

Dress properly. While everyone wants to give an impressive debut on the first date, you should avoid wearing something too bizarre to be accepted. If you are still in school, a sportswear can fulfill your purpose. For businessman or grownups, casual clothes are put up your working uniforms,no matter how well you like that Armani suit.It is no work.A few accessories such as a pair of sunglasses or silver loops on the wrist can add up to the romance sphere.

Take a bath before dating. And if you like, spray a little perfume, but unless you're sure that he or she likes the smell, don't use ones that are too strong.

Watch your manner. You're no prince of the Scotland nor Cinderella in the legend.Proper manners will ensure a lasting relationship while bad ones scare away your sweetheart. And do make sure you do not boast about your fortune, for, not everyone are green addicts. And your way of smiling, or your greatestoath, should neither be "coy" nor "by St.Loy!" after the nun in Chaucer.

Be a little sensitive than merely innocent.Do make sure you do not intrude his or her privacy on the first date. For there maybe something deeply concealed within the inner core of every heart, of which the owner doesn't share often with anyone but his intimacy.

Finally, wish you good luck.May you get your hearts combined and start a new journey in the miracle of life and love.Stay tuned till a borderline is reached, and keep on through out the whole way.

Compared with the forty year old shabby dormitory I am living in now, the one I lived in for three years in high school was heaven: three students shared one brand new suite with air conditioners and a bathroom.

In three years time we changed it thoroughly:the color of the floor turned from bright pink into muddy gray, and the closet a hive of insects proliferating among piles of rotten fruit. And our masterpiece was the bathroom, a never drying swamp which served as the habitat of various kinds of mold, and even rodents, rats would occasionally take the trouble to pay us a visit, and..all three of us felt like sobbing when we at last had to say good bye to our lovely filthy dormitory.Maybe it is because that the dormitory had changed us as well as we'd changed it.

The first lesson our dormitory taught us was to look after ourselves.Frankly speaking, we were not good students at all.I still remember the underwear that was soaked in soapy water for one and a half years before it was finally thrown away.Almost each of the boys'dormitories had gradually developed its own unique "fragrance" usually a mixture of rotten fruit, unwashed socks, stunk towels and some junk food.We could tell one dormitory from another by sniffing instead of looking. Our tolerance towards untidiness was amazing.

However, in spite of all this, we really did make some progress.Bit by bit, we started to wash dirty clothes before they stunk, cleaned the garbage bin when it could hold no more trash, we even used brushes in a not-sc-successful attempt to refurbish the floor. The point was that we were not obeying any order, we did every bit of the cleaning for ourselves, because we wanted to live in a better place.Though nothing we did could be called an achievement, it was the first time we fully bore the consequences of our behavior, and took the responsibility.

Thus it was not surprising that I often found myself the only one to clean up my university dormitory which looked no better than a garbage bin when my roommates felt normal of it.

When talking about our dormitory life, and probably all the dormitory life, we should never leave out one thing. This was what we called "bed talks".Though it was considered "illegal,"there was nothing to stop us from deliberately starting a heated discussion right after lights were out.It was our favorite and the only way of ending our day, and we were as punctual for it as our parents are for work. What was the most common topic?Girls, of course! What other topics were there for three energetic adolescent males lying comfortably in bed? We judged them, ranked them, argued over them night after night without feeling the slightest sense of boredom for three whole years. Were we

maniacs? Who is not a maniac at eighteen?

Learning English at college is different from learning English at middle school. In middle school, we learn English mainly for the entrance examination for college, while the purpose of learning English at college is quite different. We study foreign languages now to improve our ability to work in the future and especially to communicate with foreiguers.

How can we learn English well at college? Firstly, you should try your best to enlarge your in this way can you read more smoothly and understand others well.Secondly, you should pay more attention to the listening and speaking ability in learning English. While talking with foreigners, if you can't understand them, and do not know how to express yourself, the talking will be very difficult. And the last point is that you should improve your English whenever and wherever you can.

Obviously, there is still a long way for us to go to learn English well.As a proverb says,

Never too old to learn.'There are so many methods to learn English. So long as you keep on studying, your English will surely be improved.

Happiness means different things to different people. For example, some people believe that if they have lots of money, they will be happy. They believe that if they are wealthy, they will be able to do anything they want, which means the other hand, some people believe that holding a high position

in the government is happiness. In this way, you have not onlymoney, but also many other things which can't be bought by money.

However, other people believe that having lots of money is not happiness nor is holding a high position in the government. These people value their beliefs, or their intelligence, or their health. They think these can make them happy.

For me, happiness is closely tied to my studies, my work and my family. When I made great progress in my studies, when I made contributions to the society through my work, when all the members in my family live in harmony, sharing good and sad times, I was happy.Although the definition of happiness depends on each individual my "wealth" of happiness is in my studies, my work, and my family.

Some people believe that economic development should never be at the cost of the environment. They think the present serious environmental problems are largely caused by rapid

economic development. For example, land resources are shrinking because of the industrial development and the expansion of cities.Deserts are spreading because of over grazing, poor fanning, tree cutting, and strip mining. Our air and water supplies are being polluted by poisonous gassesand waste products. It is important, therefore, that we should take another look at the way in which our industries and cities are developing.

However, other people think it unnecessary to consider environmental problems now and our first priority should always be given to economic development. They believe that environmental problems are inevitable and unavoidable in the process of economic development. They are only the by products of economic development, which can be dealt with later when we have the time and money.

I think the second idea is completelywrong. Our ultimate aim in economic development is to provide a comfortable and happy life for our people. What is the point of economic development if we achieve it at the cost of our environment? There has been much evidence to prove that a balance between the two helps more rapid and continuous development.

Why is goal-setting important? Because goals can help you do and experience every meaningful thing you hope for in life.Instead of letting life happen to you, goals allow you to make your life happen.

Successful people have visions of what their life should be and they set lots of goals, both sbort-term and long-range, to help them realize the visions.By setting goals you are taking control of your life.It is like having a map to show where you want to go.A driver with an aim arrives at the destination without any waste of time or wrong the contrary, a driver with no aim drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere and just using up gas and oil.Winners in life set goals and follow through on them. They decide what they want and then get there by making plans and setting ara not difficult to set and they are not difficult to reach. It is up to you to find out what your goals, ideals and visions really are. With a clear direction, and with certain plans, you will straightly get what you want.

Without a goal, you have to live a passive life. You do not know where to go, what you want and why you are listless. Then your life be comes dull and meaningless just like the dead water in a muddy lake.

Health is the guarantee of one's happiness.Without a healthy body, one cannot do what he wants to, not to mention accomplishing his goals in life.

One can keep fit in three ways.First, he is to pay attention to hygiene.Stay away from viruses, which means one should wash hands, take baths frequently, eat and drink properly.Stay away from bad life habits, such as smoking and overworking, which severely damage the body organs.Secondly, one is to exercise regularly. He may go jogging, swimming, bicycling, playing basketball and so on.Exercises will improve one's ability to resist diseases. And last but not least, he should be optimistic, fearing no difficulties and obstacles, and always being in high spirits.

Only in good health as well as in high spirits can we greet the future, which is full of competition and challenges, and strive to achieve our ambitions energetically.

Stress is an inevitable part in our normal life. Many kinds of things, such as natural disasters, war and death can cause too much stress in our life. But according to a psychologist, on a day-to-day basis, stress may result from the small things: taking an exam, waiting in line, and having too many things to do in a limited time.

We all need stress to add flavor, challenge, and opportunity to life, but too much stress can seriously affect our physical and mental well-being, It reduces the body's immunity and harms the brain, If the stress lasts a long time, it may cause physical illness, insomnia, headaches, backaches, ulcers, high blood pressure-even heart disease.

When stress does occur, it's important to recognize and deal with it.There ore some methods we can try.A large number of physical activities can reduce onxiety.Shoring our stress with others can be enormously helpful.Making time for fun such os listening to music may be good medicine.Sometimes even crying is on efficient way to releose stress.摘自

10、城市化利弊谈-Advantages and Disadvantages of U.

Urbanization has been a subject of heated discussion for a long time. Some people are in favor, while others are opposed. In my opinion, urbanization has both advantages and disadvantages.

Generally, the advantages of urbanization can be listed as follows.First, urbanization can quicken our pace to catch up with the developed countries. We all know that the developed countries are all highly urbanized.Second, urbanization will help to solve the problem of unemployment. It will create more job opportunities for the unemployed. In addition, urbanization will free a great number of farmers from the fields, thus realizing the dream of agricultural mechanization in our country. Finally, urbanization can improve the standards of living of the migrants who move to the urban area.

However, the disadvantages of urbanization are also begin with, administration of the increasing population in urban area might be a great challenge to the, more problems, such as increasing crime rate, over crowding, might increase, since more people are concentrated in a relatively smaller place.

It is evident that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, I am in favor of urbanization.

Adversity Often Leads to Prosperity

Everybody wants to lead a successful life. But a number of people failed to realize their ambitions or their personal goals though they had dreamed of it throughout their whole lives. In order to succeed, one is required to have such personal qualities as diligence, persistence, intelligence, patience and so on.Besides them, I hold adversity is also one of the key factors and that it often leads to prosperity.

The seemingly mistaken conclusion reveals the common phcnomenon, People in adversity tend to express their full range of potential and actualize their own personal worth

the very aim of a human life. And it is also supported by lots of successful people's experiences both in old days and nowadays, both at home and abroad.

During the Period of Chunqiu, the Emperor of the Yue,Gou Jian, was defeated by the Wu and trapped in prison.Adversity stimulated him to revenge instead of discouraged Jian hanged a gall and tasted it before sleep every day so as to keep the humiliation and revenge always in mind.Owing to his undefeated qualities and persistent struggle, he defeated the Wu and drew himself from adversity to prosperity in the end.

David Beckham, the captain of the English Soccer Team, was famous for his fascinating technique as well as his handsome appearance. He led England to defeat Argentina as a national revenge in the latest Korea Japan World Cup and he was regarded to be one of the five greatest football players in the world by Brazilian football star Robert Carlos.

However, ten years ago, he was only an ordinary young player and was put in the second team of Man Utd.

Once he was even lent to another team in English A by Ferguson and it seemed that he would be abandoned as burden of his club someday.Beckham was not defeated by all the difficulties and he was sensible enough to make full use of adversity as an agent to push himself forward. He studied the combat, increased his stamina and strength, improved the technique and dribbling and trained the skill of passing and free kicking. As a result of his persistent and painstaking training, beginning with the famous wonderful goal from the centre circle in 1996, he brought himself a hot prospect.

The topic about green lifestyle has become a very popular hotspot in the last few years. It seems that people are becoming more and more careful about the environment and the quality of their life. However,we can still see many people not treasure the gift of nature.TodayIwant to set forth my opinion about living green and how to do it.

First of all,it is whether what we did will do harm to the nature that we do care.So we must reflect on every facet of our behavior before we put it into practice.Forexample, every

morning--when we set off from our department to where we work or study,we can choose

different ways to get that. But if we think over about this,it is obvious that most of us will choose walking or public transportation because these ways do the least harm.Sometimes it is up to us to decide how to deal with the nature.

So we citizens can be the master of our life style and make it green, but we can think further that our society can effect our life from time to time. How should the society do?

Compared with those western countries,China is laking in rules and law related to the environment and people’s responsibility for the nature.Unless we develop better law can we make more people join in the team of living green. What’smore, our society ought to put more effort in the technology so that we can lessen our pollution. In a word, the country should pay more attention to the environment. So can we form the green lifestyle.

Last but not least, only through the effort of everybody on the same planet, can the Earth become really green and everyone live green.

In today ’s society, the Internet is playing an important role in people ’s lives. People can chat with others by or MSN. Through the Internet, people can learn some news at any time. The Internet brings great benefits to the workers and students alike.

Nowadays, almost all workers need the help of the Internet, such as statistic huge data, sending e-mails and so on. For one thing, teachers don ’t necessarily need to chalk and they can teach students by showing the PPT. For another thing, if a boss would like to hold an emergency meeting when he is traveling, he can achieve his goal via the Internet video. Therefore, the Internet has brought a lot of convenience to workers.

Not only the workers but also the students benefit from the Internet. At present, students can acquire knowledge on education websites like englishbaby.cn and gopep.cn. If students have problems, they can send e-mail to their teachers or search for answers from the internet.

As far as I’m concerned, the Internet is of great use an d being networked is a trend in today’s society. In summary, the Internet makes people’s lifestyle more convenient and faster than before.

The urban traffic is getting increasingly crowded nowadays in China. The roads are pakced with cars, bicylces and pedestrians and traffic jams, bus delays and traffic accidents are a common scene.

Then how to solve this problem? Some suggest to lay down more roads to make the traffic less crowded and speed up the flow of traffic. Others believe that we should open up more public bus routes, so that more people will take the public buses instead of travelling by cars and bicycles.

Though above two views sound reasonable, they have their own drawbacks. The fomer may take up much land which could be used for farms and houses. The latter may cause inconvenience for those who are used to travelling by car or bicycles. I think the best answer to the traffic problem is a combination of the two. More roads can be built to hold more traffic and meanwhile more public bus routes can be opened up to those who prefer to use the public transportation.

I think lots of students like the pop singer named Jay. I also like him very much. When he released his first album, I started to buy his album. And I never miss any album of his.

Do you know as a boy, Jay was called Dull Stupid. But his mother Yeh Huimei, noticed that the quiet, shy boy seemed to dance practically when he heard the Western Pop music she used to play. His mother sent him to a piano school when he was four. When he has grown up, he had developed an ability for instant playing beyond his years. I learned to play the piano from 7 years old to 13 years old. I often feel bored when I practise playing the piano. But Jay was always crazy about playing the piano. I think he really likes music. So I admire him very much, and I call him “hero”.

I admire Jay. The real reason is when the others all denied him, he never gave up. He tried his best to change his life. I think it is good for everybody. I hope that everyone can learn from him---try their best to do everything. Then I think we will make the grade.

As the most important festival in China since ancient times, the Spring Festival is always being excepted by we kids. Because we don't need to do any homework during this time very year. It's really a precious holiday for us. And our parents are free from their work too. We go to our grandparents' to get together with them to enjoy the moment when the new year comes.

I will priciate if the holiday to be longer.

When students are going to high school, they are under great pressure, because their main goal is to enter the college, so they need to work so hard.

The school will test them so often that they want to get the best scores.Cheating on the exams is many students’ choice, as they could not do well on theexam, so they want to find the confidence by getting the high marks. Otherstudents even buy the exam answers, what they do is totally wrong. Frist, itwill cost students a lot of money on buying the answer, it refers to spend theirparents’ money, it is not easy to earn money. Second, the answers that studentsbuy are not accurate all the time, most of the answers are wrong, students areeasy to get cheated.

Students should work hard to improve their study.

In my family, there are only three people, my parents and I because of myparents’ work, they could only have one child at that time, so I don’t have anysiblings.

I felt so lonely when my parents went out for their work. Now thegovernment changed their policy, people can have the second child. But somepeople refuse because they think they can’t afford it. Despite the expense, there are many advantages to have the second child. For one thing, the onlychild can have someone company, so they won’t feel lonely on the process ofgrowing up. For another thing, two kids will help each other, they can sharethings together.

Learning to share things is a very important lesson forchildren. In Chinese tradition, more kids, more better, but I think two areperfect for the family.

Getting to Know the World outside the Campus It is necessary for college students to know the world outside the campus. This is because in this “Information Age” the society is developing so fast that we should keep pace with the progress of the outside world. Therefore, without knowledge of the outside world, it will be difficult for us to secure an ideal job after graduation; it will be more difficult for us to succeed in the near future. How to know the outside world? First of all, we should be well informed about what is happening around us with the help of mass media: radios, televisions, newspapers, the Internet, and so on. Moreover, we should do more practical social services so as to cultivate our social skills, widen our eyesight and enrich our social experience.

As for me, I plan to know the outside world in two aspects: study first to have a good command of knowledge. At the same time, I intend to hold a temporary job to know more about the outside world.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good morning! I am Oscar, the spokesman of the Students‘ Union. On behalf of the Students‘ Union, the main organizer of today‘s sports meeting, I welcome you all to the beautiful stadium. After two months‘ preparation, our annual sports meeting is held on schedule.

Thanks to the support and help from our school leaders and teachers. Though they have many school responsibilities, they have taken time off to take part in our sports activities. Let‘s give them a big hand. Through sports, we can not only develop our physical prowess, but also promote social and emotional skills, and even intellectual skills, which will matter in our future lives substantially. So hope everybody here cherish this opportunity and enjoy it.

At last, best wishes for the success of the sports meeting and best wishes for the good results of our athletes. It is my pleasure to announce the open of the sports meeting. Thank you and good luck!

When you visit London, one of the first things you will see is Big Ben, the famous clock which can be heard all over the world on the B.B.C. If the Houses of Parliament had not been burned down in 1834, the great clock would never have been erected. Big Ben takes its name from Sir Benjamin Hall who was responsible for the making of the clock when the new Houses of Parliament were being built. It is not only of immense size, but is extremely accurate as well. Officials from Greenwich Observatory have the clock checked twice a day. On the B.B.C. you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected to the clock tower. Big Ben has rarely gone wrong. Once, however, it failed to give the correct time.

A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down!

As the technology of public transportation keeps advancing, more citizens can choose to dwell in the cities that are beneficial to their own development. Inevitably, there occurs a controversy whether moving to a new city or country will lead to the rupture of relationship among friends. From my perspective, I think the statement is not sensible.

Firstly, moving to a new country or city will not result in the loss of old friends. To be more specific, the maintenance of friendship doesn’t lie in how far they live with each other and the development of technology has diversified the ways of interacting with friends. The invention of cellphones break the shackles caused by distance and overseas students can choose to communicate with their family members and friends through a variety of Apps like WeChat that makes video calls possible. Except for that, by looking at the pictures popping up all over the social media like Facebook, people can easily capture what is happening to their friends. For instance, my friend Selina took selfie in the Sydney Opera House a week ago and I would learn that she was having fun in the Australia with her picture posted on the . Therefore, a wide range of advanced electronic gadgets can be used to sustain friendship.

Moreover, instead of losing old friends, city migrants can even enlarge their social circles and achieve more success. Restricted in a city for a long period, people may be trapped in a situation that would block their development and they can gain refreshing experience while immigrating to a new city. My friend of Mine named Michael served as a Market Analyst in a renewed company in Beijing. However, he couldn’t see any progress in recent years and then an opportunity comes out. Because of his five-year working experience, a foreign trade cooperation tried to recruit him as the Market Analyst because the firm was planning to start a new program. Then he grasped the chance and earn a challenging life that he likes even though he was required to work in Shanghai. Our relationship have not experienced any interruption and his strong ability of being adapted to the new environment helps him to make lots of new friends. Accordingly, moving to a new city can, occasionally, help to break the deadlock in our professions.

Admittedly, it can be sensible that friends can be estranged owing to the long distance with each other. Specifically speaking, the chances to meet with each other will be limited a lot. However, as I just put, for one thing, people can talk with each other through various social network software. For another thing, the distance between cities is not a problem anymore since there have been many public transportation tools like the high-speed trains and airplanes that will lead us to anyplace we try to go in a very short period.

In a word, moving to a new city or a new country is good choice under some circumstance. Besides, the highly developed technology can help to strengthen the relations with our friends and the possibilities of living a different life and achieving success can both explain why I stand by the statement that it is a good thing to move to a new city.

Everyone has goals. Many people do not reach their goals for lack of planning. These three sets of goals should be developed: lifetime, intermediate and short term. Lifetime goals should be written out. These goals should be clear and reasonable. For instance, the goal to win a research prize is clear and measurable. Other lifetime goals might include publishing a certain number of influential books or articles, earning a departmental chairmanship at a major university, successfully competing for a grant from the National Science Foundation or securing a consultantship with a big corporation.

Intermediate goals relate to outcomes during the next few years. For the beginning doctoral student, intermediate goals may include completion of course work and preparation of a doctoral research proposal. Like lifetime goals, these are measurable and clearly stated.

Short-term goals involve outcomes expected during the next 12 months. These goals are more performance oriented, and they help with achievement of intermediate goals. Examples of short-term goals are earning an A in a course, learning how to program a computer or performing an experiment.

Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in, and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore? I was like that ship before my education began, only I had no way of knowing how near the harbor was.

The most important day I remember in all my life is the one on which my teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan, came to me. I am filled with wonder when I consider the immeasurable contrast between the two lives which it connects. It was the third of March, 1887, three months before I was seven years old.

On the afternoon of that exciting day, I guessed vaguely from my mother’s signs and from the hurrying to and fro in the house that something unusual was about to happen, so I went to the door and waited on the steps.

I felt approaching footsteps. I thought it was my mother and stretched out my hand. Someone took it, and then I was caught up and held close in the arms of the person who had come to reveal all things to me, and, more important than that, to love me.

The morning after my teacher came she led me into her room and gave me a doll. When I had played with it a little while, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word “d-o-l-l”. I was at once interested in this finger play and tried to imitate it. When I finally succeeded in making the letters correctly I was filled with childish pleasure and pride. Running downstairs to my mother I held up my hand and made the letters for doll. I did not know that I was spelling a word or even that words existed; I simply made my fingers go in monkey-like imitation. In the days that followed I learned to spell in this uncomprehending way many words, among them, “pin”, “hat”, “cup”, and a few verbs like “sit”, “stand” and “walk”, but my teacher had been with me several weeks before I understood that everything has a name.

One day while I was playing with my new doll, Miss Sullivan gave me my old doll, too. She then spelled “d-o-l-l” and tried to make me understand that “d-o-l-l” applied to both. Earlier in the day, we had a struggle over the two words “m-u-g” is “mug” and “w-a-t-e-r” is “water” , but I persisted in mixing up the two. I became impatient and, seizing the new doll, I dashed it on the floor, breaking it into pieces. I was not sorry after my fit of temper. In the dark, still world, I had no strong sentiment for anything.

My teacher brought me my hat, and I knew we were going out into the warm sunshine. We walked down the path to the well-house. Someone was drawing water, and my teacher placed my hand under the spout. As the cool stream gushed over one hand, she spelled into the other word water, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still; my whole attention was fixed upon the movements of her finger. Suddenly I seemed to remember something I had forgotten — a thrill of returning thought – and the mystery of language was revealed to me. I knew then that the “w-a-t-e-r” meant that wonderful cool something that was flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul and set it free.

I left the well-house eager to learn. Everything had a name and each name gave birth to a new thought. As we returned to the house, every object which I touched seemed to be full of life. That was because I saw everything with a strange, new sight that had come to me. On entering the door I remembered the doll I had broken. I felt my way to the fragments and tried in vain to put them together. Then my eyes were filled with tears, for I realized what I had done, and for the first time I felt sorry.

I learned a lot of new words that day. It would have been difficult to find a happier child than me when I lay in my small bed that night and thought of the joys that day had brought to me, and for the first time I longed for a new day to come.

Different people have different ambitions. When children study at school, they already have their own ideals. Stone want to be engineers or doctors in the future. Others want to be artists or businessmen. Still others want to be teachers or lawyers. But few want to be farmers.

Unlike most people, I choose to be a farmer in the future and make contributions to development of agriculture. Agriculture is essential to the national economy and the people's livelihood. Without it there won't be grains on which people survive. Nevertheless, farmers are ignored, even looked down upon by urban people. I determine to challenge the traditional idea and contribute to changing this situation.

However, lt is not easy to he a modern farmer in the 21st century. A modern farmer must be equipped with a variety of knowledge such as chemlstry, biology and meteorology. Therefore, I must study conscientiously from now on so that I can get the chance to study as a postgraduate in an agricultural university.

I believe only a man with scientific knowledge can meet the challenge of the 21st century and assume the task of modernizing agriculture.

The university opening ceremonythe deeply impressing feelings are as much a part of me now as they were a year ago.

As the day to register and become a freshman in FDU approached, excitementincreased.Beingauniversitystudent meant I was finally coming of age. Soon I would be on my own, making my own decisions and doing what I wanted without someone looking over my shoulder.

Despite months of anticipation, nothing could have prepared me for the impact of the actual day.Among thousands of new comers sitting on the broad lawn in front of the famous XiangHui Auditorium, listening to the speeches by the principal and student representatives, I felt myself consumed by a rush of both joy and nervousness. What would college be like? Would the other students like me? And what about the workwould I be able to keep up? Being a student in high school seemed to offer little assurance of my being able to survive college, especially in FDU which is abundant of excellent counterparts. Panic set in.It had been nice being respected as a senior by the underclass students for the past year;I didn't quite enjoy the idea of being on the bottom rung of the ladder again.I was not assured whether I wanted to grow up after all.

As if in a daze, I rose up with my new classmates around to show respect to the school song which was to be performed. As the solemn music flowed, I knew that I was hearing not just a song but the foot step of a brand new life. Exciting as the prospeet of a new life seemed, it wasn't quite easy saying goodbye to the old onethe familiar faces, the familiar routine. I would eyen miss those days when fully engaged in preparing for the college entrance exams though they were so tiring and the long commute between home and school that took me several hours each week. Good or bad, it was that I knew.

This September, I was one of the volunteers to welcome the new comers and guide them around the campus. I found the familiar mixed feelings shown on their faces. I needn't have worried about if I would like FDU, since my year here has turned out to be one of the best years of my life. Although going back to those days is impossible, it's comforting to know I can revisit my special memories any time.

What animals mean to human being, close friends or lists of recipe? Some people consider that animals should be regarded as friends instead of food or sources of clothing, while the opponents think animals are born to service for human being.

As far as I am concerned, I advocate the former's opinoin. There are two main reasons for that. First of all, it is known that more and more rare animals are endangered, because of the human being's capture. People peel off the animals' skin to make coats and use their further to make clothes, even eating the meat of extinct animals and don't care whether the food is delious or not, only because it is rare and not easily available. Which definitely leads to the extinction of certain animals. On the other hand, with the development of civilization, people should acknowledge that every creature has its right to live. Which guaranteea the harmony of the earth. Thus people need to show their respect to the animals and let them live better instead of hurting them or killing them. This behavior should be forbidden in today's civilized circumstance.

In conclusion, presently animals are no longer regarded as sources of food and clothing. In stead, animals are people's close friends who can company people especially to the olders who always like rearing the pets with whose company the olders don't feel lonely any more. For those animals who are disapearing, people need to pay more attention to them to aviod their extinction. Otherwise people could only see them in museum, not in the nature. What a pity.

It is often said that the Internet is one of the most brilliant innovations in human history. It connects billions of people of different races, cultures and religions, making our planet a global village.

No matter where you are, as long as you can access the Internet, you can contact anyone through email, chat room or notice on BBS.

However, I believe that in order to understand the communicative function of the Internet, we need to conduct a thorough analysis.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that computers and the Internet have greatly facilitated our communication with their speed, high reliability and multi-function.

An interesting phenomenon is that e-mail is becoming the most popular way of communication, replacing the time-consuming and expensive letters and telephone calls. Even greeting cards can be sent by e-mail, which is called e-greeting cards. Users can select from the menu and click the mouse to send them.

In addition, the communication between organizations and individuals has been greatly strengthened. Companies that want to advertise on the Internet can put information on their websites to attract potential buyers to learn more about their products and services. Because the Internet is an interactive way of communication, customers can also express their views on the company's website and give valuable feedback and suggestions.

On the other hand, communication through the Internet has some disadvantages. On the one hand, the information on e-mail, chat room or BBS is often very superficial and even meaningless. A lot of information comes from the boredom of human beings, rather than the real need of information exchange. In addition, people who use the Internet can easily hide their true feelings because they are facing machines rather than other people.

In sharp contrast to letters and telephones, letters are a more human and intimate way of communication. In the telephone, you can hear another person's voice and feel his emotions. Because the essence of computer technology is indifference and perseverance, network communication often deprives users of human milk.

In short, although the Internet makes human communication faster and more convenient, it is also a technology that may deprive us of human nature. This is a shortcoming that should not be ignored.

Jerry Baldwin was 30 years old. He was the manager of a pizza restaurant. He lived in an apartment about one mile north of the restaurant. He walked to and from work. When it was raining, he took the bus.

Jerry loved gangster movies. When a new one came out, he would go to the theater and watch the new movie three or four times. Then, when it went to video, Jerry would buy the video at Barney's Video Store. Jerry had a home collection of over 1,000 gangster videos. Old ones, new ones, color, black and white, English, Spanish, Japanese--he loved them all. He could tell you the name of the movie, the director, the stars, and the plot. Did you say you liked “Pulp Fiction”? Well, Jerry would rattle off all the details of that movie. And then he would invite you to his place to watch it some time. He was a nice guy.

Jerry finally decided that he would like to own a gun, just like the gangsters. So he saved his money for a couple of years. Then he went to a gun store and bought a used .38 caliber revolver for $300. While there, he also bought a couple of boxes of aition. The following Saturday morning, he went to the gun club to practice with his new revolver. He was in the club for only 10 minutes when he accidentally dropped his pistol. The gun went off, and the bullet went into Jerry's right knee.

Jerry now walks with a limp an.

When talking about the topic which is more important, ability or good looks, different people have different opinions.

In those eld man's eyes, they thought ability is more important than good looks. The old saying goes, good looks cann't full one's hunger.Whatever you do,you must have the ability in it,whenever in the past or today.

However, nowadays, many people believe that good looks take advantages than ability in the reality.Without good looks, many enterprise doesn't accept.

But in my opinion,my view is more tend to the former opion. After all, most people believe in that do not to value a person with its appearance.Although you own a perfect looks, you have no ability and talents, you are nothing.

Not everything is perfect!Ability can be improve !And also with the development of science, looks can be good looks also! Thus,on the current point of view, also ability is more important than good looks!

A fifteen-year-old boy was injured in a car accident when the minivan he was traveling in was hit by a pickup truck at an intersection. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital. The paramedics said that it appeared that the boy had nothing more serious than a broken left leg, but that internal injuries were always a possibility. The boy was conscious and alert. His mother, who was driving, was uninjured. She said that the truck appeared out of nowhere, and she thought she was going to die. She turned the steering wheel sharply to the left, and the truck hit her minivan on the passenger side.

The driver of the truck was a 50-year-old man who was unemployed and apparently had been drinking—police found 18 empty beer cans inside the truck. The man denied drinking, but he failed the police test for sobriety. When asked to touch his nose with his arms outstretched and eyes closed, he was unable to touch any part of his head.

The handcuffed man asked the police if they knew where “Mabel” was as he was put into the back seat of the police vehicle. The police asked him if Mabel was his wife. He said, “She's my dog, my dog! Where's my baby?” A dog with a collar, but no identification, minutes later, half a block away. The man was taken to the city jail and booked on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and on causing an accident

have you ever known a married couple that just didnt seem as though they should fit together -- yet they are both happy in the marriage, and you cant figure out why?

i know of one couple: he is a burly e-athlete who, in addition to being a successful salesman, coaches little league, is active in his rotary club and plays golf every saturday with friends. meanwhile, his wife is petite, quiet and a complete homebody. she doesnt even like to go out to dinner.

what mysterious force drives us into the arms of one person, while pushing us away from another who might appear equally desirable to any unbiased observer?

of the many factors influencing our idea of the perfect mate, one of the most telling, according to john money, professor emeritus of medical psychology and pediatrics at johns hopkins university, is what he calls our love map -- a group of messages encoded in our brains that describes our likes and dislikes. it shows our preferences in hair and eye color, in voice, smell, body build. it also records the kind of personality that appeals to us, whether its the warm and friendly type or the strong, silent type.

in short, we fall for and pursue those people who most clearly fit our love map. and this love map is largely determined in childhood. by age eight, the pattern for our ideal mate has already begun to float around in our brains.

when i lecture, i often ask couples in the audience what drew them to their dates or mates. answers range from shes strong and independent and i go for redheads to i love his sense of humor and that crooked smile, thats what did it.

i believe what they say. but i also know that if i were to ask those same men and women to describe their mothers, there would be many similarities between their ideal mates and their moms. yes, our mothers -- the first real love of our lives -- write a significant portion of our love map.

when were little, our mother is the center of our attention, and we are the center of hers. so our mothers characteristics leave an indelible impression, and we are forever after attracted to people with her facial features, body type, personality, even sense of humor. if our mother was warm and giving, as adults we tend to be attracted to people who are warm and giving. if our mother was strong and even-tempered, we are going to be attracted to a fair-minded strength in our mates.

the mother has an additional influence on her sons: she not only gives them clues to what they will find attractive in a mate, but also affects how they feel about women in general. so if she is warm and nice, her sons are going to think thats the way women are. they will likely grow up warm and responsive lovers and also be cooperative around the house.

conversely, a mother who has a depressive personality, and is sometimes friendly but then suddenly turns cold and rejecting, may raise a man who becomes a dance-away lover. because hes been so scared about love from his mother, he is afraid of commitment and may pull away from a girlfriend for this reason.

while the mother determines in large part what qualities attract us in a mate, its the father -- the first male in our lives -- who influences how we relate to the opposite se. fathers have an enormous effect on their childrens personalities and chances of marital happiness.

just as mothers influence their sons general feelings toward women, fathers influence their daughters general feelings about men. if a father lavishes praise on his daughter and demonstrates that she is a worthwhile person, shell feel very good about herself in relation to men. but if the father is cold, critical or absent, the daughter will tend to feel shes not very lovable or attractive.

in addition, most of us grow up with people of similar social circumstances. we hang around with people in the same town; our friends have about the same educational backgrounds and career goals. we tend to be most comfortable with these people, and therefore we tend to link up with others whose families are often much like our own.

what about opposites? are they really attracted to each other? yes and no. in many ways we want a mirror image of ourselves. physically attractive people, for eample, are usually drawn to a partner whos equally attractive.

robert winch, a longtime sociology professor at northwestern university, stated in his research that our choice of a marriage partner involves a number of social similarities. but he also maintained that we look for someone with complementary needs. a talker is attracted to someone who likes to listen, or an aggressive personality may seek out a more passive partner.

its rather like the old, but perceptive, saying on the subject of marriage that advises future partners to make sure that the holes in ones head fit the bumps in the others. or, as winch observed, its the balancing out of sociological likenesses and psychological differences that seems to point the way for the most solid lifelong romance.

however, there are instances where people of different social backgrounds end up getting married and being etremely happy. i know of one man, a factory worker from a traditional irish family in chicago, who fell in love with an african american baptist. when they got married, their friends and relatives predicted a quick failure. but 25 years later, the marriage is still strong.

it turns out that the woman was like her mother-in-law -- a loving and caring person, the type who rolls up her sleeves and volunteers to work at church or help out people in need. this is the quality that her husband fell for, and it made color and religion and any other social factors irrelevant to him.

or as george burns, who was jewish and married the irish catholic gracie allen, used to say: his marriage was his favorite gig, even though it was gracie who got all the laughs. the two of them did share certain social similarities -- both grew up in the city, in large but poor families. yet what really drew them together was evident from the first time they went onstage together. they complemented each other perfectly: he was the straight man, and she delivered the punch lines.

there are certainly such odd couples who could scarcely be happier. we all know some drop-dead beautiful person married to an unusually plain wallflower. this is a trade-off some call the equity theory.

when men and women possess a particular asset, such as high intelligence, unusual beauty, a personality that makes others swoon, or a hefty bankroll that has the same effect, some decide to trade their assets for someone elses strong points. the raging beauty may trade her luster for the power and security that come with big bucks. the not-so-talented fellow from a good family may swap his pedigree for a poor but brilliantly talented mate.

indeed, almost any combination can survive and thrive. once, some neighbors of mine stopped by for a friendly social engagement. during the evening robert, a man in his 50s, suddenly blurted out, what would you say if your daughter planned to marry someone who has a ponytail and insisted on doing the cooking?

unless your daughter loves cooking, i responded, id say she was darn lucky.

eactly, his wife agreed. its really your problem, robert -- that old macho thing rearing its head again. the point is, theyre in love.

i tried to reassure robert, pointing out that the young man their daughter had picked out seemed to be a relaed, nonjudgmental sort of person -- a trait he shared with her own mother.

is there such a thing as love at first sight? why not? when people become love-struck, what happens in that instant is the couple probably discover a unique something they have in common. it could be something as mundane as they both were reading the same book or were born in the same town. at the same time they recognize some trait in the other that complements their own personality.

i happen to be one of those who were struck by the magic wand. on that fateful weekend, while i was a sophomore at cornell university, i had a terrible cold and hesitated to join my family on vacation in the catskill mountains. finally i decided anything would be better than sitting alone in my dormitory room.

that night as i was preparing to go to dinner, my sister rushed up the stairs and said, when you walk into that dining room, youre going to meet the man youll marry.

i think i said something like buzz off! but my sister couldnt have been more right. i knew it from the moment i saw him, and the memory still gives me goose flesh. he was a premed student, also at cornell, who incidentally also had a bad cold. i fell in love with milton the instant i met him.

Nowadays, the life of university is very wonderful. the life of university once we dreamed is before us now.

My college life is so different from before . At weekends, I do a part-time job at the nearby supermarket. I need to experience the world outside, I need to grow up . From it, my get real improvement.

my study result is ordinary. And there are weak poor subjects. But I think I have to study hard. I believe: no pains ,no gains. I hope my future work is my favourite professional. More importantly, I know I have to do my work from grass-rootslevel. So, from now on, I hope I can have perseverance毅力and courage to overcome the difficulties of life . I won't give up easily.

Normally, I most like to play basketball. With friend together day,i feel very happy.

Hope I can really learn knowledge from university to experience the career in future.

My View on the “Campus Star” Contest

At an age of character and individuality being encouraged and

demonstrated, we see various “stars” pop up—singing stars, dancing stars, movie stars and sport stars, etc. Many schools even hold contests to choose their “Campus Stars”. Although these activities make our cultural life on campus more colorful and varied, a lot of problems spring up at the same time.

First of all, these activities can result in the swelling of vanity in some students, making them become arrogant, or even feel superior to other students. Moreover, these activities can greatly distract the students from their study. In order to become a star, they will, without any doubt, spend a lot of time and energy on the preparation and

competition. The focus of their academic life will be shifted, and even worse, they can become too enthusiastic about extracurricular activities and hate the academic knowledge and skills they need to grasp for their future development.

On the whole, I think these various “Campus Star” contests should be controlled on the campus. After all, schools are different from any other social institutions. Extracurricular activities should be

encouraged, but they should be helpful to the students academic study and all-round development.

Discovery is not such a big and noble word that only experts and scientists are entitled to use. In fact, every one of us makes discoveries as we grow. For example, a baby will find out how he can play with his toy car after he has tried several times. We will discover how to ride a bike skillfully after practicing again and again.

Often a discovery brings great joy to the person who makes it. You will certainly be delighted when you find the thing you have been looking for. You will be extremely happy when you one day realize that you have learned and mastered a skill or method which was almost too difficult for you at the beginning.

Sometimes, however, discovery means regret or even pain. You witt feet great regret when you find that you have hurt one of your friends or one of your family members. You will surelybe disappointed when you discover that you failed in the examination for which you have prepared for a tong time. Joy or sorrow as it may bring, discovery is an integral part of our life.

Blood Test

Let me toll you something interesting, The other day we were having physical examination. We were tested twice on our blood. Once it was 5ml to test the function of the Iiver. The other time the blood was taken from our ring finger to test the blood type, blood cells, white cells or something.

It was during the second drawing of blood that something happened. An old lady was standing there. Dear me! She took a needle and pricked me in such a way that it appeared that she wasnot testing my blood, but was sewing a shoe sole instead. As a result, it left me moaning gently.

Standing behind me and seeing me in such pains, Miss Liang Liying tried hard to be mentally prepared. She tightened her fist and turned her face away from it. As soon as the lady pricked the needle into her finger She cried out "Oh, dear!" and jumped back with her mouth wide open, revealing her teeth.

It was really painful. It was some time before we got over it. Recalling what had happened, we could not help but laugh at each other.

great days to be remembered seldom come, but small ones surround us daily.

i do not have a roman holiday, but i have a non smoking day instead.

today a nc-smoking sign easily hooks up my interesting and rewarding eperience on the world non smoking day a few years

as a high school student, i, together with my friends, volunteered on a campaign to discourage public smoking by persuacling people in public places to etinguish their cigarettes and put the cigarette ends into our metal boes. and we would in return give them a memorial sticker bearing patterns and words voicing the theme of the non smoking day.

the first step is never a fast step. after hunting for quite a while, we set our target on a young man who was enjoying his cigarette at a bus stop. embracing the philosophy of "nothing ventured, nothing gained", we summoned up all our courage, walked up and asked, "sir, would you please not smoke in public places?" "it is none of your business! why are you so busily engaged in such things? go and mind your own eams!" he was great, i believed, for he was able to drag on his cigarette while at the same time not giving his tongue a break. and i further found out that for this man, such words as "good for your health" or "good for common courtesy" had long lost their appeal. maybe such kind of situation should call for some other policy. i managed a smile, blended with sweet words and tried to dilute his resistance. and when we put the sticker on his clothes, he was lingering over the joy of having done us "a big favor."

now you see, maybe flattery should be vindicated, for to please is a great step toward persuading and a smile is a curve that sets everything straight.

our work ran smoothly when things began easy to handle in the afternoon. but don't worry. troubles are just around the corner. the second hard rock we met was a middle aged man who appeared to be more of a smoking addict than a smokingenthusiast. nothing seemed to be capable of etinguishing that cigarette. even the wind seemed to be powerless. we showed him the cigarettes filled metal bo. we spotlighted the hazards of public smoking. but all was in vain.

mark twain was right, habit is habit, not to be flung out of window by anyone, but to be coaed downstairs one step at a time. i then tried to peel the stubborn onion one layer at a time."ok, i know how you feel. but do you know how other people around you feel?" "you see that child? actually he smokes more of your cigarette than you do!" "in fact, you are etinguishing one cell of lung cancer when you etinguish your cigarette. you are etinguishing one cell of the disease of selfishness when you etinguish your cigarette." it is that maybe that constant drops do wear the stone. at last he etinguished our words by etinguishing his cigarette.

as the sinking sun tinted the horizon, we began to count the cigarette ends, savoring our little victories.

that day saw me toiling for 6 hours, inviting loads of troubles, collecting 57 cigarette-ends,savoring hundreds of potential second hand smokers and developing for myself some sense of responsibility toward society.

though it was a little depressing to realize that those people would naturally pick up their "tradition" just where they had temporarily laid it down, yet how far can we estimate our actions would travel! and besides that, i was rewarded in another day.that is, the eperience dawned upon me the significance of care and consideration for other people. since then, i have been as cooperative as possible whenever i am asked to improve my public behavior and i am always ready to get involved in such volunteer work.

in a sense, the highest reward for ones toil is not what they get from it but what they become by it.

there are many arguments about the advantages and disadvantages of eamination.some people think eamination is the only best way to test how eaminees have mastered what they have studied and it is the only measurement for eaminers to select which persons they need.while, on the other hand, some object that eamination cant measure how the students have really studied.they say it can do nothing but burden the students.

as for me,i think for both eaminers and eaminees, the eamination can show what and how much the eaminees have mastered.the results of eaminations are just like mirrors for both eaminers and eaminees.

through eamination the eaminees can check their work and get aware of which aspects they have not done well,so that theyll make much improvement in their work.as far as eaminees are concerned, they can not only know how they have studied but also find out what they still unknown or what they havent mastered well.thus, they will be inspired to greater efforts to improve their studying method so as to make greater progress.of course too many eaminations are burbens to both eaminers and eaminees.

in sum,the eamination does more good than harm for both eaminers and eaminees.we must take a correct attitude towards eamination.we should take full advantage of it and avoid its disadvantage.

everybody has his friends. some people like to choose friends who are different from themselves while others prefer those who are similar to themselves. each of the choices has its advantages.

when people have friends similar to themselves, they and their friends can chat, play, and do things together harmoniously. the result is that they all feel relaed and can truly enjoy each others company.

when a guy has friends different from himself, the advantage he has is that he can benefit from the contacts with different people. his friends may be different from him in character, education, occupation, social status, or political and religious beliefs. from those friends, he can learn a lot of things that he has never eperienced himself and he can also enjoy being with thera when they know each other well.

comparing the advantages of both cases, i think that it would be better for me to have both kinds of friends …… some who are similar to me and some who are different from me. in this way, i can have the best of both worlds. for instance, when i want to rela or when i am too tired to be careful about my speech and manner, i can stay with those friends who are like me. but, when i feel like it, it is also possible for me to stay with those who are different from me and learn something new.
